Annual limits
In 2014, PPACA will eliminate "mini-med plans," which restrict benefits through high deductibles or low annual coverage limits. By 2014, health insurance exchanges are expected to be in operation, providing what the federal government anticipates will be more affordable health care coverage. Until then, PPACA requires insurers to phase out the use of annual dollar limits on benefits. In 2011, plans can impose an annual limit of no less than $750,000. However, the federal government has granted temporary waivers to hundreds of employers that certified the restrictions on annual limits would either 1.) result in large premium increases or 2.) significantly decrease access to coverage.
